Gore-Tex, DryTek, HighTex, etc?

Gore-Tex:
  • Based on the ePTFE membrane, which has billions of microscopic pores per square centimetre: water can't get in, but water vapour can get out.
  • Completely waterproof and windproof, the breathability is very good in principle (RET value typically less than 6, less than 1.5 in the best ones).
  • High quality but also high price.
  • Only Gore-Tex approved manufacturers are allowed to use Gore-Tex, and each product is tested individually
DryTek, HighTex and similar:
  • Often manufacturers' own, cheaper membranes. The principle of operation is similar: a waterproof and breathable micro membrane.
  • Breathability and waterproofing may vary more and exact values are not always given.
  • Generally cheaper than Gore-Tex products.
In a nutshell, water resistance is available in all quality gloves regardless of the membrane, but the biggest difference comes in the breathability of the gloves. Gore-Tex membranes still have the best breathability on the market so far.
